Abstract

Healthcare waste is classified as hazardous because it may transmit infection, cause injury, and pollute the environment when handled improperly. Cleaning service staff are among the occupational groups with the highest risk of exposure to such waste and are therefore required to use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) consistently. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between behavior comprising knowledge, attitude, and practice—and compliance with PPE use during medical waste handling among cleaning service staff at Bunda Thamrin General Hospital (RSU Bunda Thamrin). A quantitative cross-sectional design was applied. The population consisted of 47 cleaning service staff, and all were included as respondents through total sampling. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed univariately and bivariately using the Chi-Square test with a significance level of α = 0.05. The findings showed that 40 respondents (85.1%) had good knowledge, 44 (93.6%) held a positive attitude, 41 (87.2%) demonstrated good practice, and 42 (89.4%) were compliant with PPE use. Bivariate analysis revealed a significant association between compliance with PPE use and knowledge (p = 0.000), attitude (p = 0.027), and practice (p = 0.000). Knowledge, attitude, and practice were significantly associated with compliance with PPE use during medical waste handling. The hospital is encouraged to sustain training, supervision, and evaluation of PPE use to strengthen occupational safety among cleaning service staff.
