Abstract

This study aims to analyze phonological errors in Qur’anic reading among students at the Roudlotut Tholibin Islamic Boarding School, particularly in the recitation of Juz ‘Amma, with a focus on errors related to the articulation points and phonetic properties of Arabic letters. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method with a field research approach. Data were collected through observation, listening, and audio recording of students’ Qur’anic recitation and were analyzed based on the articulation points (makharij al-ḥuruf) and properties of the letters. The findings identified nine phonological errors involving eight forms of letter substitution: /ḍ/→/d/, /š/→/s/, /ʿ/→/ʔ/, /x/→/h/, /q/→/k/, /ð/→/d/, /ð/→/z/, /ṣ/→/s/, and /θ/→/s/. The errors were concentrated in the articulation point of the tongue, accounting for seven errors, while two errors occurred in the throat. No errors were identified in letters articulated from the oral cavity, lips, or nasal cavity. These findings indicate that students’ difficulties were primarily related to accurately producing articulation points and distinguishing the phonetic properties of acoustically or articulatorily similar Arabic letters. The findings highlight the need for continuous pronunciation practice, direct teacher correction, auditory discrimination exercises, and systematic application of tajweed rules in Qur’anic reading instruction.
