Abstract

Family planning has moved from a birth-control programme toward a strategy for improving the quality of family life, yet empirical studies of millennial Muslim couples within the Maqasid al-Shari’ah framework remain scarce. This study analyses how millennial Muslim couples understand and practise family planning and how far that practice corresponds to the objectives of Maqasid al-Shari’ah. A qualitative empirical case-study design was used, drawing on in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation with seven purposively selected couples in Pamulang, South Tangerang, analysed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing with source and technique triangulation. All informants regard family planning as a way of planning family life rather than a means of limiting births, and this interpretation grows stronger among economically established couples. The practice corresponds to the protection of life, lineage, and property, and operates across the daruriyyat and hajiyyat levels.
