Abstract

College basketball student-athletes are required to balance dual roles: meeting academic demands while adhering to routine training and competition schedules. Self-management skills are therefore considered crucial for maintaining motivation to achieve success in both academic and athletic domains. This study aimed to examine the role of self-management in the achievement motivation of basketball student-athletes. A non-experimental quantitative approach was employed, using a correlational design with simple regression and the bootstrapping method. Convenience sampling was used, with sample size determined via the Lemeshow formula, resulting in 99 student-athletes; data were collected through an online questionnaire. The self-management scale yielded a reliability coefficient (α) of 0.966 with 12 valid items, while the achievement motivation scale yielded an α of 0.892 with 21 valid items. Normality tests indicated the data were not normally distributed; hypothesis testing was therefore conducted using simple linear regression with the bootstrapping method. Results showed a significance value of 0.835 (p > 0.05), a regression coefficient (B) of 0.048, and a 95% confidence interval ranging from -0.435 to 0.483, leading to rejection of the research hypothesis. These findings indicate that self-management does not play a significant role in the achievement motivation of basketball student-athletes, suggesting that other factors, such as coach support, team climate, and competitive experience, may play a more substantial role in shaping their achievement motivation.
