Abstract

This study examines the reproduction of Nyelamaq Laut, the meanings maintained by its practitioners, and the opportunities and risks associated with information technology in Batu Nampar Selatan, Jerowaru District, East Lombok Regency. A descriptive qualitative approach was used, drawing on observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. The informant list includes ten customary figures, community figures, and residents. Data were analysed through reduction, display, and conclusion drawing, organised around changing media, ritual meanings, and safeguarding challenges. Informants reported wider access to information through the internet and the use of weather applications to support event preparation. Changes in music and audio equipment were discussed in relation to the ritual atmosphere. Gratitude to Allah, prayers for safety at sea, and togetherness remained central to informants’ accounts. They also expressed concerns about entertainment-oriented presentation, commercialisation, and intergenerational differences. These accounts indicate perceived risks rather than evidence of widespread loss of meaning or actual conflict. Analytically, the findings connect changes in supporting media with the reaffirmation of values and assessments of change. Safeguarding should support community control over digital representation and intergenerational learning that combines documentation with direct participation. The study does not measure transmission outcomes or establish causal effects of technology. Its contribution lies in distinguishing reported changes from perceived risks to inform context-sensitive safeguarding.
