Abstract

This study aims to analyze the Perang Topat ritual as a form of local ecological practice and as an expression of the community’s belief system in environmental conservation. The research employs a qualitative approach using an ethnoecology-based case study design. Data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews with customary leaders, religious figures, and local community members, as well as document analysis. Data analysis was conducted using an interpretative thematic approach through coding, categorization, and inductive identification of ecological values. The findings indicate that the Perang Topat ritual functions as both a religious and social practice while embodying ecological values, including respect for nature, sustainable resource management, and the strengthening of collective awareness regarding environmental preservation. The belief systems of the Sasak (Islam) and Balinese (Hindu) communities concerning the sacredness of nature foster ecological behaviors that are transmitted intergenerationally through ritual practices. Perang Topat can therefore be understood as a form of local ecological practice that contributes to environmental conservation grounded in local wisdom.

Abstract

Religious tourism at the tombs of religious figures is not only related to spiritual activities but also contributes to shaping the social life of surrounding communities. This study aims to examine the social meaning of religious tourism at the Tomb of TGKH. M. Zainuddin Abdul Madjid from the perspective of the Bermi community. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach involving 10 informants consisting of a tomb administrator, religious leaders, members of the Bermi community, pilgrims, and a neighborhood head selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation and analyzed interactively through data condensation, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. Data validity was ensured through source and technique triangulation. The findings show that religious tourism is interpreted by the Bermi community as part of their collective identity and pride in TGKH. M. Zainuddin Abdul Madjid, as well as a space for social interaction and strengthening social solidarity. Religious tourism also contributes to preserving religious values and the figure's exemplary teachings while creating economic opportunities for the local community. However, increasing visitor numbers also create challenges, including limited facilities, traffic congestion, waste, and competition among traders. Thus, religious tourism represents a social reality with identity, solidarity, religious, and economic dimensions in the social life of the Bermi community.

Abstract

This study examines the philosophical meanings of the raga tradition within the Sasak death ritual in Lenek Village, East Lombok, and explains its socio-cultural values and continuity amid social change. A qualitative approach with an ethnographic method was employed to understand raga from the perspective of community members as cultural actors. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Informants were selected purposively and included customary leaders, religious leaders/Tuan Guru, bereaved families, raga craftsmen, and community leaders. Data were analyzed interactively through data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. Data credibility was strengthened through source and technique triangulation and confirmation with informants. The findings indicate that raga is a cultural object that functions simultaneously as a symbol and a socio-religious medium. Woven bamboo represents flexibility, steadfastness, unity, and interpersonal relationships; rice represents the source of life and purity of intention; mature coconuts with water symbolize maturity, usefulness, coolness, and the continuity of prayer; while fruits, natural products, and traditional foods represent fertility, blessings, welfare, cultural identity, and charity for the deceased. The production and implementation of raga strengthen mutual cooperation, solidarity, social concern, collective responsibility, respect, and the transmission of norms and ethics. The findings also show that social change has primarily altered technical aspects rather than the core meanings of the tradition. Thus, raga can be understood as a cultural symbol connecting Sasak views of life and death with social solidarity and collective identity.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the existence of the Tebolak Beak Parade within the Bale Langgak Cultural Festival, identify the factors influencing its continuity, explain the transformation of the parade’s meanings and functions within the context of the cultural festival, and examine community strategies for preserving cultural values amid modernization. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews with 15 purposively selected informants, and documentation. Data were analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña model, consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, while data validity was established through source triangulation, technique triangulation, and member checking. The findings indicate that the existence of the Tebolak Beak Parade is manifested in four main forms: the dulang parade as a cultural procession, prayer and pilgrimage rituals at the Batu Ngereng Cemetery, cultural arts performances, and a culinary bazaar supporting the festival. The continuity of the parade is influenced by support from local government, customary leaders, religious leaders, community participation, and integration with the tourism sector. However, limited understanding among younger generations of the philosophical values underlying the tradition, the tendency toward festival commercialization, and weak regeneration of cultural practitioners constitute major challenges. Although the parade has undergone a transformation from a communal ritual into a cultural attraction, the community continues to preserve its core elements through ritual practices, the transmission of cultural values to younger generations, and the strengthening of customary institutions. These findings demonstrate that the Tebolak Beak Parade functions not only as a cultural attraction but also as a medium for preserving the cultural heritage of the Sasak community, continuously adapting to social change without abandoning its traditional values.

Abstract

The phenomenon of single parent women is an emerging social reality in various regions of Indonesia, including West Nusa Tenggara. This study aims to describe the strategies and obstacles faced by single parent women in fulfilling family economic needs. Using a qualitative approach with phenomenological design, this study involved 15 informants selected purposively in North Tanak Malit Hamlet, South Masbagik Village, Masbagik District. Data collection techniques included participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data analysis used the Miles and Huberman model with source triangulation as validity testing. The results showed that single parent women's strategies include optimizing domestic and public roles through the use of agricultural land, laundry-ironing services, selling snacks, and borrowing from close relatives. The obstacles faced include limited rest time, difficulty managing time between work and childcare, and problematic financial management. This study confirms that the double burden experienced by single parent women is a social construction that requires policy interventions based on economic empowerment and strengthening of social capital.
