Abstract

This study aims to analyze the methodological functions of asbāb al-wurūd in connecting hadith texts with their historical and social contexts and in determining the boundaries of meaning in the contextualization of hadith. This study employed library research using a textual-contextual analytical approach. The data were drawn from hadith literature, asbāb al-wurūd works, hadith commentaries, and other relevant scholarly sources. Data were analyzed by identifying reports concerning the circumstances of hadith emergence, examining their historical and social contexts, comparing textual meanings with contextual dimensions, and determining the scope of the hadith’s messages. The findings indicate that asbāb al-wurūd performs three main methodological functions: clarificative, delimitative, and contextual-transformative. The clarificative function elucidates the intended meaning of a hadith by considering the circumstances surrounding its emergence. The delimitative function distinguishes between general and specific messages and helps determine the boundaries of their application. Meanwhile, the contextual-transformative function enables the normative values or purposes of hadith to be considered within different social contexts without detaching them from the textual basis. These findings indicate that hadith contextualization requires verification of relevant reports and a clear distinction between historical causes, social contexts, ‘illah, and normative purposes to avoid both rigid textualism and speculative interpretation
