Abstract

There are two functions of language, namely commucative and expressive. As people listen to the music through its lyrics, language tends to be expressive since it is able to convey the meaning and background of the song. Figurative language is used to create a special effect ot the audiences. Figurative language carries non-literal meaning which helps the songwriters to convey the meaning of their songs.  Therefore, this study aimed at identifying and describing the type and the meanings of figurative language which were used in Eminem’s song lyrics and determining the dominant type of figurative language used in the songs lyrics. This research used descriptive qualitative as the method. In collecting the data, the researcher used library research (reading and noting), since the data were already existed in the form of documentation (song lyrics). After the data were collected, the data were analyzed by using Cresswell’s theory. From the analysis, the researcher found that there are 136 data containing figurative language and 12 types of figurative language which are used in the song lyrics. Simile type of figurative language is mostly used in the song lyrics. Therefore, it is suggested that the students keep learning to do figurative language analysis in literary works in order to enrich their insight about figure of speech.

Abstract

This study aimed at describing the types of errors in seventh grade students’ descriptive texts and identifying causes of errors. There are two research questions in this study, namely: (1) What are types of grammatical errors made by seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Sukawati in writing descriptive texts? and (2) What are the causes of grammatical errors made by seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Sukawati in writing descriptive text?. The data for study were collected by document study, interview method, and recording. The instruments were researcher, writing task, guideline, interview guide, and mobile recorder. The results of this study showed that there were five types of errors found in students’ descriptive writing, namely: omission, addition, misformation, misordering, and spelling. The total number of errors was 541 errors. There were three causes error found in this study, namely: carelessness (40.67%), first language interference (53.42%), and translation (5.91%).

Abstract

This study aimed to find out the types of grammatical errors made by the tenth grade students of SMA N 1 Cluring and classify the causes of the students’ errors that influenced their errors in writing recount texts. Descriptive qualitative research was used in this study to explore the data which focused on students’ grammatical errors in writing recount texts. The result of this study shows that there were 399 grammatical errors and consisting of 12 types of errors, namely omission of article, omission of preposition, omission of marker, omission of conjunction, simple addition, regularization error, alternating form, misordering, word choice, spelling, punctuation, and capitalization found in the students’ recount texts. The type of grammatical error mostly made by the students was alternating form which was 309 (77.44%) in total number. The most frequent source of errors which mostly influenced the students’ errors in their writings was intralingual transfer which had 325 (81.45%) of the total number of errors. However, the students still had problems in using grammatically correct sentences in paragraph, especially in writing recount texts. Furthermore, knowing the students’ grammatical errors in writing recount texts can be used as a basis for conducting remedial teaching. Keywords: Error Analysis; Grammatical Error; Recount Text.
