Abstract

This study examined learners’ experiences in a micro-group English immersion program, focusing on psychological safety, communicative agency, and communication challenges. Although previous research has highlighted the benefits of English immersion, limited attention has been given to learners’ experiences in small-group immersion within informal learning contexts. A qualitative case study was conducted with three female participants who joined a 14-day home-based English immersion program organized by Celebes International School in Makassar, Indonesia. Data were collected through observations, field notes, and semi-structured interviews and analyzed thematically using within-case and cross-case analysis. The findings revealed three major themes: psychological safety, communicative agency, and communication challenges. Participants experienced a supportive and low-pressure environment that encouraged English use, active participation, and greater conversational autonomy. However, they encountered difficulties in retrieving vocabulary and expressing ideas spontaneously during real-time interaction. These challenges were gradually managed through peer support, interactional strategies, and sustained exposure to English. Overall, micro-group immersion provided a supportive context for meaningful communication and conversational development.
