Abstract

Performativity pressure on main Instagram accounts drives Generation Z to create second accounts as private spaces for authentic emotional expression. This study aims to analyze the motives, meanings, and dynamics of emotional catharsis among Gen Z through second-account use. A qualitative instrumental case study was employed, with data collected via in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation involving five students, one follower, and one counselor, followed by cross-case analysis. Findings reveal that second-account use is primarily driven by the need to express emotions authentically without fear of judgment. These accounts are perceived as digital safe spaces for sharing stress, sadness, and disappointment. The cathartic pattern demonstrates an emotional shift from pre-posting anxiety to post-posting relief. Peer responses played a significant role: supportive responses reinforced relief, whereas limited responses triggered overthinking and renewed anxiety. Digital catharsis may evolve into avoidance coping when emotional release is unaccompanied by real-world problem-solving efforts. These findings underscore the urgency of integrating digital emotion regulation competencies into school guidance and counseling services.
