Abstract

Forensic dental identification is primarily based on the comparison of antemortem and postmortem dental records to identify characteristics that may support individual recognition. Dental treatments can strengthen this comparison because their location, distribution, configuration, radiographic characteristics, and combinations may produce patterns that are relatively distinctive for each person. This narrative review evaluates the forensic significance of dental restorations as radiographic markers, focusing on morphological comparison, the radiographic visibility of restorative materials, changes associated with treatment over time, three dimensional imaging, and developing computational methods. Current evidence indicates that restorative findings have greater forensic value when assessed together with the overall dental profile rather than considered independently. Conventional dental radiographs remain particularly valuable because they are commonly available in antemortem clinical records, while cone beam computed tomography and postmortem computed tomography can provide additional spatial and structural information. Advances in artificial intelligence and image analysis may further facilitate the detection and comparison of treatment features. Nevertheless, their direct forensic application still requires further validation. Therefore, dental restorations are best interpreted as complementary comparative evidence supported by reliable records, concordant dental findings, and professional assessment.
