Abstract

Islamic Religious Education (PAI) learning at SMA Wahid Hasyim Karanggeneng is still dominated by conventional, teacher-centered methods, which leaves students relatively passive and their learning engagement underdeveloped. This condition motivated the researcher to examine the implementation of Wordwall-based Game-Based Learning (GBL) as an effort to increase students' learning engagement. This study aims to: 1) describe the implementation of the Wordwall- based GBL method in PAI learning at SMA Wahid Hasyim Karanggeneng, 2) analyze students' learning engagement in PAI after the method was applied, and 3) identify the supporting and inhibiting factors in its implementation. This study employed descriptive qualitative field research, with data collected through observation, in- depth interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using the interactive model of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The findings show that the Wordwall-based GBL method was implemented well through three stages, namely planning, implementation, and evaluation. Students' learning engagement increased, marked by their courage in asking and answering questions, active participation in discussion, cooperation in completing tasks, and growing enthusiasm and self-confidence during learning. Supporting factors included school support, teacher readiness, student enthusiasm, and adequate facilities such as internet access, LCD projectors, and smartphones. Inhibiting factors included unstable internet connections and differences in students' ability to operate digital media, which could be minimized through thorough lesson preparation and teacher guidance.
