Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of the Know–What–Learned (KWL) strategy through Instagram photo captions in improving students' recount writing skills and to examine students' responses to the implementation of the strategy. A quantitative comparative research design was employed involving 70 tenth-grade students from a public senior high school in West Bandung, Indonesia, selected through purposive sampling. The participants were divided into two groups: one was taught using the KWL strategy through Instagram photo captions, while the other received instruction using the conventional KWL strategy. Data were collected through pre-tests, post-tests, and questionnaires and analyzed using normalized gain analysis and an independent-samples t-test. The findings revealed that both groups improved their recount writing skills. The experimental group improved from a mean pre-test score of 48.17 to 64.11, whereas the conventional KWL group improved from 50.06 to 69.80. The normalized gain analysis indicated a significant difference between the two groups (p = 0.019), with the conventional KWL strategy producing greater improvement. Questionnaire results showed that 51.4% of students expressed moderately positive responses toward the use of the KWL strategy through Instagram photo captions. Overall, both approaches improved students' recount writing skills, although the conventional KWL strategy was more effective.
