Abstract

Language is a bridge for people to communicate with one another in society. There is formal and informal language in the environment. This study focuses on slang language. Slang language is an informal way to communicate that is commonly utilized by adolescents. They may use slang, but some ages do not. As a result, slang language is only comprehended by certain people. As a result, slang is commonly used in songs. there are many songs that use slang language in the lyrics to deliver the song's purpose to the listener. This study uses descriptive qualitative methods to collect data from the lyrics of The Script's song "The Man Who Can't Be Moved." From the twelve types of slang that exist, five are included in the lyrics: clipping, compounding, coinage, mixing, and dialogue. According to the data, the most commonly used slang language in The Scripts song is blending, which has twelve blending terms inside the lyrics.

Abstract

Slang is considered as very informal words or phrases. The purpose of this study was to determine the meaning of the slang and to find out the type of the slang in the song lyrics “Damn I Love You”by Agnes Monica. This study discusses the analysis of slang in Agnes Monica's song lyrics. This research is a descriptive qualitative design. The data classified based on the word formation process according to Yule's (2010) theory. Methods and focus on content analysis are used in analysing the data. The analysis starts from October 2021 to November 2021. The results of this study shows that the slang words in Agnes Monica's song consist of several word formations, there are seventeen types of slang word formation in this song. Tthere are three types of slang identified based on the findings from the song clipping, 7 blending, and Coinage. Based on the result, the blending process is the most common process found in Agnes Monica song.

Abstract

Netflix is a streaming application that is very popular to young generation, Netflix allows users to access local and international movies and films with a very diverse selection. The objective of this study is to see how Netflix affects the improvement of students’ English language skills. This study used a qualitative descriptive and the data collected were analyzed using thematic analysis by incorporating interpretive description approach. A semi-structure interview with open-ended questions is used as the instrument in this study. The respondents of the study were 15 students of Universitas Advent Indonesia taken from different faculties and purposive sampling is used in selecting the respondents. There were 11 females and 4 males in this study. The results of this study indicated that the use of the Netflix application to watch foreign films has been able to improve students’ English language skills.

Abstract

The most important part of language learning is vocabulary. To do well in English and effectively perform a good English, students must be able to retain words. The purpose of this study is to seek whether vocabulary learning through animation and video in groups learning perform better than individual learning. This study used a quantitative analysis approach with a comparison design to find out the students' vocabulary enhancement. The vocabulary pre-test and post-tests were utilized as the instruments of this study. The sample were VIII grade students from two classes at a public school in Cimahi, Bandung. The results of this study showed that both groups of students improved their open words vocabulary, and students who are taught through animation and video with learning in groups performed better than the students who learn individually, with pre-test scores of 59.59 and 59.00, and post-test scores of 83.47 and 73.63.

Abstract

Code-switching has become a characteristic or pattern of communicative change in contemporary generation. This effect occurs in Indonesian culture, which was acculturated with a foreign language, and code-switching can let them construct a simple phrase to declare that is not available in their own language. It is frequently heard on various national entertainment shows, by content producers on YouTube, and in podcasts. The main objective of this research paper is to explicate which type and kind of code switching is more widespread when the two speakers speak in Deddy Corbuzier's podcast. This study collects data using qualitative methodologies for sociolinguistic phenomena and documentation procedures. In this study, Poplack theory is applied to examine the different forms of code switching. The authors encountered three patterns of code-switching: Tag-switching, inter-sentential code-switching, and intra-sentential code-switching are part of code-switching. Based upon the outcomes of the data acquired from the Deddy Corbuzier Podcast, the researchers summarize that the form of switching code that is most commonly employed in communication is Inter Sentential Code Switching.

Abstract

Euphemisms are a linguistic phenomenon whereby milder or courteous words are substituted for blunt or unpleasant expressions. This study focuses on the use of euphemisms and related expressions in Paulo Coelho's book, "The Alchemist." Specifically, the research aims to identify the various euphemistic devices employed, ascertain the prevalence of such devices, and explicate their significance within the context of the novel. A descriptive qualitative research design was employed, which involved an in-depth and detailed exploration and analysis of the phenomena under investigation. To obtain the necessary data, a comprehensive review of relevant literature and library resources was conducted. The results revealed that Paulo Coelho's "The Alchemist" contains several euphemisms that serve to enhance the overall tone and mood of the narrative. The study further identified four distinct types of euphemisms in the novel, namely euphemisms used to soften descriptions of physical attributes, mental states, skills, etc., euphemisms used to make disagreeable situations more palatable, euphemisms used in business contexts, and euphemisms used in other contexts. Of these categories, the most common type, accounting for 44.5% of all instances, was found to be euphemisms used to make something sound more pleasant.

Abstract

Program Nasional Plus di Universitas Advent Indonesia bertujuan untuk meningkatkan pembelajaran mahasiswa dan meningkatkan kualitas pendidikan keperawatan, khususnya keterampilan bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini mengeksplorasi pengalaman mahasiswa keperawatan dengan program tersebut. Pendekatan metode campuran digunakan, menggabungkan data kuantitatif dari kuesioner Google Form dengan 31 responden dan data kualitatif dari wawancara semi-struktural dengan 5 responden. Studi ini mengidentifikasi kategori, sub-kategori, dan sub-tema dari pengalaman ini, memberikan wawasan bagi UNAI dan institusi lain dalam merancang dan melaksanakan program serupa. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa Program Nasional Plus Keperawatan berdampak positif pada keterampilan bahasa Inggris mahasiswa, meningkatkan pengalaman belajar mereka dan potensial membuka peluang karier di luar negeri.

Abstract

Self-confidence is one of the important factors in determine students’ English achievement. This study aims to find out the correlation between self-confidence and students’ English achievement and to answer the question of the hypothesis there is a correlation between self-confidence and students’ English achievement. The sample of this study were 30 tertiary students of English Language Education study program at Universitas Advent Indonesia. A questionnaire was used to gather the data, the questionnaire consisted of 20 questions and used the five-point Likert scale. The questionnaire was given to the students to measure their self-confidence and then correlated the questionnaire result with the students’ English achievement grade. Spearman’s Coefficient of (Rank) correlation was used in order to answer the question of the correlation between self-confidence and the students’ English achievement and the data was calculated using SPSS. The result showed that there is no significant correlation between self-confidence and students’ English achievement. However, since there is no enough evidence, they cannot be rejected. For future researchers, it is recommended to do another study with enough data and evidence with different levels of students and different aspect of English skills such as speaking. Abstract

Reading is one of the important skills in English needed by the second language learner. The purpose of this study is to find out is there a significant difference on students’ reading comprehension through Read, Cover, Remember and Retell (RCRR) strategy. The population were VII grade students of SMPN 10 Cimahi. They were divided into two groups, the experimental and conventional group. The experimental group was taught using RCRR strategy while the conventional group was taught using conventional method. This study used quantitative research method and experimental design by using pre-test and post-test. The study was designed to find out the answer of the following questions: Are the students have same level of ability before the treatment? Is there a significant difference on students’ achievement in reading comprehension between the experimental and conventional group? What is the students’ response toward Read, Cover, Remember and Retell (RCRR) strategy?. The instrument used for this study is reading comprehension test and a questionnaire. The result of this study showed that there was a significant difference on students’ achievement in reading comprehension with mean score of pre-test was 40.27 and mean score of post-test was 73.47. The result of the questionnaire toward the students’ responses was 68% positive. It indicated that students had a positive response toward the RCRR strategy. Furthermore, the suggestion for the English teachers, it is recommended to use RCRR strategy to teach reading comprehension in their classes because it can improve the students’ reading comprehension ability.

Abstract

Vocabulary is the fundamental aspect in learning English. Without adequate vocabulary learners find it difficult to communicate, express ideas or opinion, comprehend simple text, and listen to instruction. Authentic materials refers to pictures, photographs, video selection and radio. This study sought to find out the following questions: How is the vocabulary ability of students who were taught using authentic materials through multimedia and authentic materials only? Is the vocabulary enhancement of those students who are taught using authentic materials through multimedia is better than those students who are taught using authentic materials? What are the students’ responses toward the use of authentic materials and multimedia? The study was quantitative research method and a comparative design by using pre-test and post-test. The populations of this study were 10th grade of senior high school students where they are divided into two groups, the first group were taught using authentic materials through multimedia and the second group were taught using authentic materials. The instruments used in this study were vocabulary test and questionnaire. The result of this study showed that both groups has enhanced the vocabulary ability with the mean score of pre-test was 53.93 for authentic materials through multimedia and 59.97 for authentic materials. It indicated that the initial ability of the authentic materials group was higher than the authentic materials through multimedia group. Therefore, the mean score of the post-test was 73.80 for the authentic materials through multimedia group and 70.83 for the authentic materials group. It showed that the result of the authentic materials through multimedia group was better than the authentic materials group. The students’ responses toward the use of authentic materials through multimedia were 80% positive and only 3,3% positive response towards the use of authentic materials. The conclusion of this study is the use of authentic materials through multimedia is very effective to enhance students’ vocabulary knowledge. Furthermore, suggestion for the English teachers, it is recommended to use authentic materials through multimedia to teach and enhance students’ vocabulary knowledge. It is very effective technique to be applied at the classroom and to make the students engage on the teaching and learning process. Meanwhile, teachers need to prepare the material needed ahead since it is time consuming and ensure the school has provided enough facility especially computers, projector and internet access to support the learning process.
