Abstract

Background: Omega-3 is an essential fatty acid that plays an important role in supporting children's growth and development, particularly brain development and cognitive function. Knowledge regarding the benefits and dietary sources of omega-3 among school-aged children still needs to be improved. Schools provide a strategic environment for delivering health education and developing awareness of the importance of adequate nutritional intake from an early age. Objective: This community service activity aimed to improve elementary school students' knowledge and understanding of omega-3, including its definition, health benefits, dietary sources, and importance for children's growth and development. Method: The activity was conducted at SD Negeri 2 Wolo, Purwodadi, through interactive education and socialization for elementary school students. The educational materials covered the introduction of omega-3, its benefits for the body and children's development, dietary sources of omega-3, and fish oil as one of its sources. The materials were delivered using an interactive approach supported by educational games and examples of fish oil products to facilitate students' understanding and retention of the information. Results: The activity showed that prior to the educational session, most students had limited knowledge about omega-3, its health benefits, and dietary sources such as fish oil. Following the educational intervention, students demonstrated improved understanding of omega-3, its benefits for health and growth, and its dietary sources. The use of educational games and fish oil product examples increased students' engagement during the activity and helped facilitate their understanding of the materials presented. Conclusion: Interactive education on omega-3 can serve as an effective approach to improving nutritional literacy among school-aged children. Communicative educational methods supported by educational games and product examples can help students understand the importance of omega-3 for health and growth. Continuous nutritional education programs in schools are recommended to develop healthy knowledge and awareness from an early age.
