Abstract

Running speed is a crucial physical condition component in athletic learning at elementary schools; however, systematic training methods for this level remain limited. This study aims to determine the effect and difference between deer run (lari kijang) and hopping exercises on improving the 80-meter running speed of fifth-grade male students. A quantitative approach with a two-group pretest-posttest experimental design was employed. A total of 98 male students were selected using proportional sampling from Cluster III, Karangasem District, divided into Experimental Group I (deer run exercise, n=49) and Experimental Group II (hopping exercise, n=49). The intervention was conducted for 6 weeks at a frequency of 4 sessions per week using a 40-meter, 4-repetition, 3-set protocol. Results showed deer run training produced a mean improvement of 2.44 seconds (pretest: 13.91s; posttest: 11.47s), while hopping produced 1.50 seconds improvement (pretest: 13.97s; posttest: 12.47s). Both paired t-tests and independent t-tests confirmed statistically significant effects and differences (p<0.05). In conclusion, deer run exercise is more effective than hopping in improving 80-meter running speed among elementary school students.
