Abstract

One-on-one situations between a goalkeeper and an attacker are among the most critical and decisive moments in football, yet empirical evidence on the technical-tactical determinants of save success in youth goalkeepers remains limited. This study aimed to examine the relationship between timing and body position with goalkeeper save success in one-on-one situations, and to identify the dominant predictor. A quantitative ex-post facto correlational design was employed, involving 12 goalkeepers (aged 11–18 years) from SSB Bangunjiwo, Demak Regency. Data were obtained from 30 valid one-on-one events using frame-by-frame video analysis (Kinovea 0.9.5) and a validated biomechanical observation rubric. Binary logistic regression was applied due to the binary outcome variable and violation of linearity for body position. Timing did not significantly predict save success (Sig. = 0.217; Exp(B) = 1.018), whereas body position showed a significant negative effect (Sig. = 0.011; Exp(B) = 0.776). The combined model was highly significant (Omnibus Sig. = 0.000), with Nagelkerke R² = 0.602. Body position emerged as the dominant predictor. These findings suggest that over-emphasis on static postural ideals may constrain adaptive responding, and that youth goalkeeper training should incorporate a constraints-led approach to develop situation-responsive decision-making.
