Abstract

Customary inheritance law in matrilineal societies plays a crucial role in maintaining family continuity and social structure. This study aims to analyze the role of customary inheritance law and the distribution mechanisms within the matrilineal marriage system in Dariwali Village, Jerebu'u District, Ngada Regency. The research employed a qualitative method with an ethnographic approach, utilizing observation, interviews, and documentation techniques. Primary data were obtained from traditional elders, community leaders, and indigenous community members, while secondary data were derived from books and journals. The findings reveal that inheritance law serves to preserve the integrity of inherited assets, ensure family sustainability, and maintain kinship structures. High-value ancestral property is inherited through the maternal line to women as primary successors, while men act as managers and guardians. Inheritance also functions as a family economic resource and supports traditional activities. The system distinguishes between collective high-status inheritance and more flexible low-status inheritance. Disputes are resolved through family deliberations and traditional institutions prioritizing social harmony. This research contributes to understanding the resilience of customary law in contemporary matrilineal societies.
