Abstract

Students’ writing skills in producing Observation Report Texts (Laporan Hasil Observasi/LHO) at the junior high school level continue to face challenges, particularly in organizing observational information into systematic writing that conforms to the characteristics of the genre. One alternative to address these challenges is the development of technology-assisted visual teaching materials. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of Canva-assisted Observation Report Text teaching materials in improving the LHO writing skills of eighth-grade students at public junior high schools in Magelang City. This quantitative study employed a quasi-experimental method with a nonequivalent control group design. The population consisted of all eighth-grade students at public junior high schools in Magelang City. The sample comprised 110 students, with 55 students from SMP Negeri 4 Magelang assigned to the experimental group and 55 students from SMP Negeri 7 Magelang assigned to the control group. The test instrument was piloted with eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 9 Magelang. Data were collected through pretests and posttests of LHO writing skills and analyzed using the Wilcoxon test, Mann–Whitney U test, and ANCOVA. The results showed an improvement of 5.00 points in the experimental group, compared with 0.91 points in the control group. The ANCOVA results indicated a significant difference between the groups after controlling for initial writing ability (F(1,107) = 7.56; p = .007). Thus, Canva-assisted Observation Report Text teaching materials were effective in improving students’ LHO writing skills within the context of this study.
