Abstract

This study analyzes framing construction in ten human-interest feature stories published by Kumparan between February and April 2026 on the survival and economic struggles of low-income and marginalized communities. The study used a descriptive qualitative approach based on Gamson and Modigliani’s framing model. The corpus was purposively selected based on genre features, human-interest themes, publication period, and non-advertorial status. The study coded textual and visual units using five framing devices (metaphors, catchphrases, exemplars, depictions, and visual images) and three reasoning devices (roots, appeals to principle, and consequences). The study reports 100 coding instances: 28 depictions, 11 exemplars, 11 roots, and 10 instances for each of the other five categories. Because the source manuscript also documents at least one overlapping coding case, this figure is treated as the number of coding instances rather than a definitive count of unique units. The synthesis reveals a core frame in which marginalized people are represented as resilient, hardworking, dignified, and hopeful actors confronting economic limitations. Depictions dominate because feature writing relies heavily on descriptions of setting, living conditions, and character to construct emotional proximity. The study extends the Gamson-Modigliani model from event-centered news to narrative feature journalism by linking framing devices, moral reasoning, and human-interest construction.
