Abstract

The availability of global media based on local insights is still limited among Community Reading Corner (Taman Baca Masyarakat/TBM) in East Java. The innovation of literacy products relevant to ecological awareness has become a necessity in response to current environmental issues. Moreover, multilingual-based education using national, local, and foreign languages other than English still seems rare in TBMs. The literacy product of Asal-Usul Majapahit was selected and adapted into a trilingual comic consisting of Indonesian, Javanese, and Japanese. This project aims to create an innovative eco-themed comic accessible to the target partners, preserve the local language, and broaden knowledge of the Japanese language. The implementation method of this project consists of preparation step, execution step, and evaluation step. The preparation step includes observing the needs of TBM Paraduta and coordinating the project with Balai Bahasa Jawa Timur (BBJT), as well as adapting the folklore of Asal-Usul Majapahit into printed trilingual comics. Next, the execution step was carried out with the cooperation of the literacy team of BBJT, which included the socialization of ecological issues in literature and a readability test by the members of TBM Paraduta. Last, the evaluation step was conducted through questionnaires distributed to 21 members of TBM Paraduta who participated in this project. The result of the questionnaire shows that the majority of respondents possessed a high level of understanding regarding ecological issues (85.7%), a good understanding of the Javanese language (81%), and a high level of interest in learning Japanese (85,7%). The enthusiasm and appreciation from TBM Paraduta for the trilingual eco-themed comic demonstrates its potential effectiveness as a literacy medium to strengthen both local and foreign languages within TBM Paraduta community.
