Abstract

Operating room nurses play a crucial role in ensuring patient safety and the success of surgical procedures, from the preparation stage through the postoperative period. The on-call work system, which requires nurses to be on standby outside of regular working hours, has the potential to increase work-related fatigue and reduce nurses’ mental well-being. Work-related fatigue can increase the risk of errors and workplace accidents that impact patient safety, while a decline in mental well-being can affect concentration, motivation, and the quality of nursing care. This study aims to analyze the relationship between on-call work duration and the levels of work-related fatigue and mental well-being among operating room nurses at a hospital in Malang City. The study employed an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 24 operating room nurses at the Central Surgical Unit of the hospital in Malang City, selected using total sampling. The results of the analysis showed a strong relationship between on-call work duration and levels of work-related fatigue (p=0.001; r=0.713) as well as a moderate relationship with mental well-being (p=0.010; r=-0.514). The longer the on-call work duration, the higher the levels of work-related fatigue and the lower the mental well-being of the nurses.
