Abstract

Hyperuricemia is a condition characterized by uric acid levels above the normal reference threshold and is influenced by various risk factors, including Body Mass Index (BMI). This study aimed to identify the contribution of BMI to increased uric acid levels and its association with hyperuricemia among young adults in RT 03, Kampung Ciburial. A quantitative observational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted among 24 respondents selected by purposive sampling. Blood uric acid levels were measured from peripheral capillary blood using the Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) method. Statistical analysis included the Shapiro-Wilk normality test followed by Pearson correlation analysis. The results demonstrated a strong, positive, and statistically significant correlation between BMI and blood uric acid levels (r = 0.785; p < 0.001). Higher BMI values tended to be associated with higher uric acid levels, and hyperuricemia occurred more frequently among respondents with BMI ≥ 23 kg/m². BMI monitoring may therefore serve as an initial community-based screening measure for hyperuricemia risk.
