Abstract

This study examines the sarong as a marker of Madurese men’s cultural identity in Bangkalan Regency, East Java, focusing on everyday practice in the community’s home region rather than the migrant settings emphasized in prior Madurese identity studies. Using a focused ethnography design, data were collected through visual observation of incidentally selected informants across various social settings, complemented by informal conversations, and analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña. The findings show that the sarong remains embedded in daily life beyond religious activities and carries strong symbolic value, reflected in residents’ willingness to purchase high-quality sarongs despite steep prices. Sarong-wearing is interpreted as a form of cultural habitus continuously reproduced through social interaction, affirming that local cultural identity can persist alongside modernization rather than being displaced by it. These findings extend Madurese identity scholarship into the everyday practices of its home community.
