Abstract

This study aims to analyze the direct and indirect effects of social media usage intensity on academic procrastination through learning motivation as a mediating variable among students in the Department of Social Sciences Education at the University of Riau. The study employs a quantitative approach using path analysis. The sample consisted of 72 students selected using random sampling. Data collection was conducted using a Likert-scale questionnaire and analyzed using multiple regression and the Sobel test. The results of the study indicate: (1) the intensity of social media use has a positive and significant direct effect on academic procrastination; (2) learning motivation has a negative and significant direct effect on academic procrastination; (3) the intensity of social media use does not have a significant direct effect on learning motivation; (4) learning motivation does not act as a mediator in the relationship between the intensity of social media use and academic procrastination. In conclusion, the intensity of social media use and learning motivation influence academic procrastination directly through separate pathways, not through a mediating pathway.
