Abstract

Liver dysfunction is a condition in which the structure and function of the liver are impaired due to exposure to various harmful substances, such as drugs, chemical compounds, and xenobiotic metabolites, which can cause damage to liver cells. Tuba leaves (Derris elliptica) contain various bioactive compounds, particularly flavonoids and phenolic compounds, which have potential antioxidant and hepatoprotective activities. This study aimed to determine the effect of ethanol extract of tuba leaves on total bilirubin levels in male white rats (Rattus norvegicus) with liver dysfunction induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl₄). This study employed an in vivo experimental method in which the experimental animals were divided into six groups: a negative control group receiving 0.5% Na-CMC, a positive control group receiving CCl₄ at 2 mL/kg body weight, a comparator group receiving Hepa-Q at 150 mg, and three treatment groups receiving tuba leaf extract at doses of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg body weight. Bilirubin level data were analyzed using normality and homogeneity tests, followed by One-Way ANOVA and the Post Hoc Tukey HSD test. The results showed that administration of ethanol extract of tuba leaves reduced total bilirubin levels in male white rats induced by CCl₄. The One-Way ANOVA results after treatment showed a p-value of < 0.05, indicating a significant difference in bilirubin levels among the groups. Among the three extract doses tested, the dose of 400 mg/kg body weight showed the greatest reduction in bilirubin levels and was therefore considered the most effective dose in this study. Based on these results, it can be concluded that ethanol extract of tuba leaves has an effect on reducing total bilirubin levels in male white rats with CCl₄-induced liver dysfunction.
