Abstract

Suicidal ideation among Generation Z is a mental health issue influenced by the interplay of psychological and relational factors, particularly family dynamics. This study aimed to explore the implementation of family counseling as a preventive measure against suicidal ideation among Generation Z. A qualitative approach with a case study design was employed, involving four Generation Z university students identified as being at risk of suicidal ideation based on initial assessments using interviews, observation, and the Beck Suicide Intent Scale (SIS). Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. Family counseling was conducted over one to two sessions, and the data were analysed using a spiral model. The results indicate that family counseling elicited varying responses among the participants. One participant demonstrated optimal progress, characterised by increased openness in communication, greater emotional expression, self-acceptance, and a more positive outlook on life. Conversely, three participants did not show optimal change, as they remained affected by family conflict, limited emotional support, and insufficient family involvement. These findings suggest that the quality of communication, emotional support, and family involvement are crucial factors in strengthening self-forgiveness and psychospiritual health as part of efforts to prevent suicidal ideation among Generation Z.
