Abstract

This study aims to determine the relationship betweenself-stigma with adherence to antiretroviral (ARV) medication in HIV/AIDS patients at the VCT Polyclinic of Dr. Haryoto Lumajang Regional General Hospital. The background of this study is based on the phenomenon of persistent barriers to patient adherence in undergoing ARV therapy, one of which is influenced by the stigma experienced by individuals towards themselves. The research method used was a quantitative correlational study with a sample of 84 HIV/AIDS patients still undergoing ARV therapy at the VCT Polyclinic of Dr. Haryoto Lumajang Regional General Hospital (aged over 18 years) and selected using an accidental sampling technique. The instruments used were the Berger HIV Stigma Scale (23 items; α = 0.934) and the MMAS-8 Scale (8 items; α = 0.670) which had been modified from the previous version and adapted to the context of the research subjects. Data analysis used the Spearman Rank correlation technique. The results of the analysis showed no relationship betweenself-stigma with adherence to ARV medication (r = -0.066; p ≥ 0.548). These findings indicate that most patients are still non-compliant with their ARV therapy regimen. Forgetfulness is the most dominant barrier. These findings also revealed that half of the respondents still feltself-stigma . Disclosure concern is a dominant aspect. The results of this study can be used as a consideration for providing interventions that focus on reducingself-stigma by strengthening positive self-image and increasingself efficacy PLWHA so that adherence to taking ARV medication can be maintained through an effective VCT program.
