Abstract

The umbilical cord (funiculus umbilicalis), also known as the funis, extends from the fetal umbilicus to the fetal surface of the placenta and is 50–55 cm long. The cord encloses two umbilical arteries, which transport oxygenated blood from the fetus and purified blood from the placenta to the fetus (Sodikin, 2009). The Indonesian profile for North Sumatra states that infection is one of the leading causes of death in newborns. The incidence of newborn infections in Indonesia is around 24% to 34%, most of which is caused by neonatal tetanus. The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency distribution of knowledge of postpartum mothers regarding umbilical cord care based on (age, parity, education, source of information) at the R Manurung Midwife Clinic in Pematangsiantar. Essentially, caring for the umbilical cord is a simple procedure. Although simple, it requires attention to principles such as always washing hands with clean water and soap, keeping the area around the umbilical cord dry and free from moisture, and not applying anything to the umbilical cord area. This research method is descriptive with a cross-sectional approach. Of the 20 respondents, the majority of postpartum mothers (50%) had sufficient knowledge, 10 (50%), 7 (35%), and 3 (15%) had good knowledge. Results of the study on the Overview of Postpartum Mothers' Knowledge of Umbilical Cord Care at the R Manurung Midwife Clinic in 2018.
