Abstract

This study aims to systematically investigate and scientifically reconstruct the indigenous knowledge, tools, materials, and processes embedded in traditional terites production within Kabupaten Karo into compatible contextual learning content for junior high school science. A qualitative approach with an ethnoscience perspective was employed. Utilizing a purposive sampling technique, data were gathered from six selected participants, comprising three experienced terites producers from Kabanjahe District and three local junior high school science teachers. Data collection involved participatory observation, semi-structured interviews, documentation, and questionnaires. The findings reveal that terites production follows structured stages, including preparation of tools and ingredients, rumen extraction and filtration, spice grinding and mixing, cooking, and periodic reheating. These stages embody scientific principles such as ruminant digestion, microbial fermentation, filtration, heat transfer, energy transformation, physical changes, diffusion, and the use of natural additives. The process directly aligns with junior high school science competencies, providing a concrete contextual learning resource that connects theoretical knowledge with cultural practices while preserving local heritage. Terites production demonstrates the high utility of integrating indigenous knowledge into science education, thereby enhancing students’ conceptual understanding, engagement, and appreciation of local wisdom through practical and culturally meaningful experiences.
