Abstract

Clove oil (Oleum caryophyli) is an essential oil obtained from the distillation of clove flower buds. The main components of clove oil are terpenes and their derivatives. The main terpenes of clove oil are eugenol (60-90%), eugenol acetate, and caryophyllene. Eugenol has a refreshing and spicy aroma so it can be a component to freshen the mouth. In this study, the solvent modification between ethanol and ether was carried out in identifying and isolating clove oil eugenol. The results of organoleptic observations on ethanol solvents showed a dark yellow solution color while on diethyl ether it was clearer. Eugenol is a colorless, odorless, hard liquid with a spicy taste. Eugenol will easily turn brown when in open conditions. In the isolation process, diethyl ether is better at isolating eugenol. The yield obtained in the isolation process was 39.3%. From the TLC test, the Rf value 0.8 was obtained where the longer the spots, the greater the Rf value on the TLC plate, which means that more compounds are attracted. The results of the isolation and identification of eugenol show that diethyl ether solvent is more effective in the process of isolating clove oil eugenol.
