Abstract

This study aims to examine the development of a Problem Based Learning (PBL)-based Islamic Religious Education (PAI) curriculum in State Islamic Senior High Schools (Madrasah Aliyah Negeri) through a library research approach. PBL is positioned as a relevant pedagogical approach for promoting contextual, participatory, and critical-oriented PAI learning. This study employs library research by reviewing scholarly books and peer-reviewed journal articles published within the last five years. Data were collected through a systematic search of academic sources related to curriculum development, Islamic Religious Education, and the implementation of PBL. Data analysis was conducted using an analytical-critical approach, involving data reduction, data display, and analytical conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the development of a PBL-based PAI curriculum  has the potential to enhance the relevance of Islamic religious learning to students’ real-life contexts while supporting the development of 21st-century competencies. The integration of PBL into the PAI curriculum requires adjustments in learning objectives, content organization, and evaluation systems that emphasize authentic assessment. This study is expected to serve as a conceptual reference for the development of PAI curricula in State Islamic Senior High Schools and to contribute to the academic discourse on curriculum innovation in Islamic religious education in Indonesia
