Abstract

The dominance of Western epistemology in the development of modern science has led to significant material progress, yet it has simultaneously triggered a crisis of values, ethics, and spirituality. Within the context of Nusantara society, particularly the Malay tradition, there exists a local knowledge system rooted in the concept of akal budi and Islamic teachings, representing a unity of rationality, ethics, and spirituality. This article aims to reconstruct the epistemology of Malay akal budi as a foundation for developing the philosophy of science within the context of Nusantara civilization. This research employs a qualitative approach with a literature study method and a philosophical analysis of literature relevant to the philosophy of science, Islamic philosophy, and Malay cultural texts. The results show that the epistemology of Malay akal budi is integrative, combining reason (akal), character/discretion (budi), revelation (wahyu), and custom (adat) as sources of knowledge. This epistemological model holds strategic relevance in building a Nusantara philosophy of science oriented toward the common good (maslahah), civility (adab), and social harmony. This article contributes to strengthening alternative epistemologies that are contextual and rooted in the local wisdom of Nusantara

Abstract

The rapid development of information technology over the last two decades has shifted human civilization toward the Society 5.0 era, transitioning social interactions into an accelerated and limitless cyberspace. However, this transformation is accompanied by a digital morality crisis, characterized by the prevalence of hate speech, hoaxes, and the degradation of digital civility among Indonesian netizens. This study aims to reconstruct the local wisdom values of Malay Civilization as an ethical foundation for the digital age. Employing a qualitative method based on library research and hermeneutic analysis, this research engages in an intensive dialogue with cultural texts, such as Tunjuk Ajar Melayu, to identify the relevance of traditional values in contemporary contexts. The discussion highlights three crucial points: first, the revitalization of the concepts of "Budi Bahasa" (noble character and speech) and "Menjaga Lisan" (keep your mouth) as filters in the transformation from oral to textual (digital) communication to prevent hate speech and cyberbullying. Second, the application of the "Tahu Diri" (self-awareness/propriety) philosophy as an antithesis to the culture of flexing and oversharing on social media. Third, the reinforcement of the "Sifat Amanah" (trustworthiness) as a basis for information verification (tabayyun) to counteract the spread of hoaxes. The study concludes that Malay local wisdom is not merely a legacy of the past, but an axiological foundation capable of strengthening identity and human dignity in cyberspace. Contextualizing these values is essential to ensure that technological advancement does not uproot society from its cultural origins

Abstract

This article reconstructs 21st-century Malay civilization by formulating a development model rooted in the philosophy of science and designed to work within the digital technology ecosystem. The research uses a qualitative approach based on library research through conceptual-critical analysis, thematic synthesis, and ontology-epistemology-axiology relationship mapping to reorganize the assumptions, objectives, and mechanisms of civilization development in the digital space. The results of the research produced a four-pillar model: (1) a monotheistic view of nature and ethics of civility as value orientation; (2) knowledge management to maintain the validity, context, and authenticity of tradition while opening up innovation; (3) a digital-cultural ecosystem that includes data-based curation, archiving, and dissemination; and (4) fair, inclusive, and sustainable digital transformation policies. The main findings show that digitization without an axiological foundation risks promoting cultural commodification and fragmentation of authority, while the philosophy of science provides criteria for validity, wisdom, and public accountability for the production of civilizational knowledge. This model is operationalized through a cycle of diagnosis–design–coherence testing–evaluation with indicators: narrative quality, community participation, halal creative economic impact, and social resilience. Recommendations emphasize strengthening digital-ethical literacy, developing an open repository of Malay heritage, culturally sensitive AI governance guidelines, and multi-actor collaboration to ensure that technology becomes a lever for dignity, not just a machine for popularity

Abstract

Jawi script is not merely a writing system but an epistemological foundation that shapes the Malay worldview regarding Islam and the universe. This article aims to critically analyze the position of Jawi script as an instrument of knowledge transfer, tracing its historical roots, and evaluating its challenges and opportunities in the digital era. This study employs a qualitative method with a library research approach. Data were collected from primary and secondary literature, including manuscripts, books, and recent journal articles (2021–2025). The results indicate that: (1) Historically, Jawi served as a tool for the Islamization of Malay language and thought, replacing the dominance of Hindu-Buddhist concepts; (2) Functionally, Jawi once served as the written lingua franca in administration, education, and religious propagation; (3) Digital transformation through manuscript digitization and the development of AI-based OCR (Optical Character Recognition) technology is key to Jawi revitalization. In conclusion, the preservation of Jawi in the 21st century must not stop at cultural nostalgia but must transform into a digital asset accessible to the millennial generation to maintain the continuity of Islamic epistemology in the Archipelago
