Abstract

This study analyzes the rhetorical structure of the method section in Arabic scientific articles written by Arabic and Indonesian speakers in the field of linguistics and education. Using the framework of Zhang and Wannaruk (2016), this study analyzed 80 articles to identify Move and Step patterns, as well as patterns of using tenses and diathesis (voice). The results showed that Move 2 (Explaining Data Collection Procedures) was the most dominant (56.9%), indicating that researchers focused more on data collection than on design aspects (Move 1: 19.5%) and data analysis (Move 3: 23.5%). Indonesian speakers put more emphasis on the procedural aspects of Move 2 (62.7%) than Arabic speakers (51.7%), while Arabic speakers were more balanced in compiling the three Moves. In addition, differences were found in the use of tenses and diathesis (voice). Madhi (past tense) is more dominant than mudhari' (present tense), especially in Move 1 and Move 2, as this section describes the research procedures that have been carried out. Active voice is more widely used in Moves 1 and 2, while passive voice is more dominant in Move 3 (Data Analysis) to emphasize the results of the analysis rather than the role of the researcher in the process.
