Abstract

Abstract. Pulmonary function is an important indicator of respiratory capacity and is influenced by physical activity. Weight training is anaerobic and increases intrathoracic pressure, whereas futsal is an aerobic sport that enhances pulmonary ventilation. However, studies directly comparing pulmonary function among students who regularly participate in these two types of exercise remain limited. This study aimed to determine the differences in FEV₁, FVC, and the FEV₁/FVC ratio between students who engage in weight training and those who play futsal at FPOK UPI, using a comparative cross-sectional design involving male students who had regularly performed these activities for ≥3 months with a frequency of ≥3 times per week through purposive sampling. Pulmonary function was measured using ATS/ERS-standardized spirometry. Data were analyzed using the independent t-test or Mann–Whitney test according to distribution. The futsal group had higher mean FEV₁ and FVC values than the weight training group, while the FEV₁/FVC ratio remained within normal limits in both groups. Significant differences were found in FEV₁ and FVC, but not in the FEV₁/FVC ratio. Aerobic training in futsal more effectively stimulates increases in ventilation and lung capacity, resulting in better pulmonary function compared to weight training, which emphasizes muscle strength without continuous enhancement of ventilatory capacity. These findings support the theory that aerobic activity is more effective in improving lung volume.
