Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial activity of brown seaweed Sargassumpolycystum ethanol extract 96% to Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. S. polycystum is coming from Cabbiyavillage, Talango sub-district, Sumenep district, Madura that is extracted with ethanol 96% with macerationmethod. This research used five treatments with three repetitions. Each treatment consist of brownseaweed S.polycystum ethanol extract 96% in some concentrations, they were 10% w/v, 20% w/v, 40% w/v, 80%w/v, and 100% w/v, positive control used Chloramphenicol 0,1%, and negative control used ethanol extract 96%that was used for extract solvent. Antibacterial test of brown seaweed S.polycystum ethanol extract 96%used well diffusion method and the number of bacteria was adjusted to Mc Farland turbidity standard.Aftercollecting data The data that was obtained was analyzed using One-way ANOVA in SPSS statistical application. The result showed that brown seaweed S.polycystum ethanol extract 96% had the antibacterial activityto S.aureus. The measuring of inhibition zone results were: in 10% concentration was 3,49 ± 3,55 mm; 20%concentration was 4,22 ± 3,91 mm; 40% concentration was 5,97 ± 5,09 mm; 80% concentration was 8,41 ± 2,76mm; and 100% concentration was 11,07 ± 0,07 mm.
