Abstract

The growing global sportswear market demands innovation in comfort, particularly in the modest sportswear category for Muslim women, who face specific challenges in moisture management. This study aims to analyze the effect of material variations on the functional characteristics of weft-knit fabrics for Muslim women's aerobics wear. Fabric samples were produced using a Stoll flat knitting machine with five material variations: 100% cotton, 100% rayon, 100% polyester, a polyester/cotton blend (65/35), and a polyester/rayon blend (65/35). All samples used plain stitch structure with yarn counts of Ne1 16.17 (cotton), Ne1 20.15 (rayon), Ne1 18.22 (polyester), Ne1 19.37 (polyester/cotton), and Ne1 20.70 (polyester/rayon), respectively. Wales density ranged from 20.0-22.0 WPI and courses density from 30.0-33.8 CPI. Tested parameters included fabric weight, thickness, loop density, breathability, tactile comfort, and moisture management. The analysis showed that material variations significantly impacted the fabric's functional performance. Polyester/rayon 65/35 blend fabric (E Fabric) was identified as the most optimal material with breathability test results (58.44 cm3/sec/cm2), lowest bending work, and Accumulative One-way Transport Index Grade 3. These findings recommend the use of polyester/rayon blends to optimize thermophysiological comfort in aerobics wear for Muslim women.
