Abstract

Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing E. coli may be found in cat feces and can act as a reservoir of antimicrobial resistance. This study aimed to determine ESBL-encoding gene patterns in E. coli isolated from cat feces in Surabaya, Indonesia. This descriptive observational laboratory study used 20 ESBL-producing E. coli isolates from cat feces in Surabaya, Indonesia. The blaCTX-M, blaSHV, and blaTEM genes were detected using polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and amplicons were visualized by agarose gel electrophoresis. Data were analyzed descriptively as frequencies and percentages. The blaCTX-M gene was detected in 16 isolates (80%), blaTEM in 6 isolates (30%), while blaSHV was not detected. Gene-pattern analysis showed 13 isolates (65%) carrying blaCTX-M alone, 3 isolates (15%) carrying blaTEM alone, 3 isolates (15%) carrying both blaCTX-M and blaTEM, and 1 isolate (5%) without the three target genes. blaCTX-M was the dominant ESBL gene among E. coli isolates from cat feces. These findings highlight the presence of ESBL-associated genes in E. coli from cat feces and support the inclusion of companion animals in One Health antimicrobial resistance surveillance.
