Abstract

This study aims to develop an ethnoscience-based digital exploratory lab module of local culture for science learning at Sanggar Kegiatan Belajar (SKB) Kabupaten Bekasi and to examine its validity, practicality, and effectiveness in improving learners’ procedural skills and critical thinking. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model (analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation). Data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, pretest–posttest, and documentation. Instruments were validated through expert judgment by subject-matter, media, and ethnoscience/cultural experts. Quantitative data were analyzed using percentage of validity and practicality, Aiken’s V, normality test, Wilcoxon test, and N-Gain, while qualitative data were analyzed descriptively and thematically. The module was categorized as very valid by subject-matter experts, media experts, and nonformal education practitioners, with an average validity of 89.33%; Aiken’s V for the subject-matter expert assessment was 0.903. The module was also categorized as very practical based on tutor responses (87.50%) and learner responses (86.35%). In a trial with 45 learners, posttest scores increased significantly over pretest scores (Wilcoxon test, p ≤ 0.003), with an N-Gain of 0.72 (high) for procedural skills and 0.68 (moderate) for critical thinking. These findings suggest that integrating ethnoscience, local culture, and digital exploratory labs can provide a contextual, interactive, and meaningful science learning experience. The module is recommended as supplementary teaching material for nonformal education and as a reference for developing culture-based digital science learning in community education settings.
