<![CDATA[Abstract This study analyzes how two AI platforms, Claude AI and ChatGPT, translate Madurese cultural terms into English. The aim is to determine the categories of these terms, the translation procedures used by each AI, and whether the meaning of the terms in the book is preserved in the translations. This study used a descriptive qualitative design. The data were 25 Madurese cultural terms, along with the sentences in which they appear. The data were taken from the book Tabbhuwân: Seni Pertunjukan Masyarakat Madura di Tapal Kuda (Hidayatullah, 2024). To collect the data, each term was translated by Claude AI and ChatGPT, and the results were recorded in a table. In the analysis stage, the terms were classified into Newmark’s (1988) categories of cultural words, the translation procedures were identified and counted, and the results of the two AIs were then compared. The results show that most of the terms fall into the category of organizations, customs, activities, and concepts (10 terms). In terms of translation procedures, ChatGPT retained the original term in 8 cases and provided a descriptive equivalent in 8 cases. Claude AI used through-translation in 4 cases and produced 5 translations that did not match the meaning in the book, whereas ChatGPT produced none. These results suggest that AI translations of Madurese cultural terms should be checked by someone who understands the culture before they are used.Keywords: Cultural words, Madurese culture, AI translation, Claude AI, ChatGPT. Abstrak Penelitian ini menganalisis bagaimana dua platform AI, yaitu Claude AI dan ChatGPT, menerjemahkan istilah budaya Madura ke dalam bahasa Inggris. Tujuannya adalah untuk mengetahui kategori istilah tersebut, prosedur penerjemahan yang dipakai oleh masing-masing AI, dan apakah makna istilah dalam buku tetap terjaga dalam terjemahannya. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain kualitatif deskriptif. Data berupa 25 istilah budaya Madura beserta kalimat tempat istilah itu muncul. Data diambil dari buku Tabbhuwân: Seni Pertunjukan Masyarakat Madura di Tapal Kuda (Hidayatullah, 2024). Untuk mengumpulkan data, setiap istilah diterjemahkan oleh Claude AI dan ChatGPT, lalu hasilnya dimasukkan ke dalam tabel. Pada tahap analisis, istilah dikelompokkan ke dalam kategori kata budaya Newmark (1988), prosedur penerjemahan diidentifikasi dan dihitung, lalu hasil kedua AI dibandingkan. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa sebagian besar istilah termasuk kategori organisasi, adat, aktivitas, dan konsep (10 istilah). Hasil dari prosedur penerjemahan, ChatGPT mempertahankan istilah asli pada 8 istilah dan memberikan padanan deskriptif pada 8 istilah. Claude AI menggunakan through-translation pada 4 istilah dan menghasilkan 5 terjemahan yang tidak sesuai dengan makna dalam buku, sedangkan ChatGPT tidak.
