Abstract

Ornamental fish are valued for their body coloration, which is influenced by chromatophore pigments, nutrition, and environmental factors such as light exposure. Butterfly pea flower (Clitoria ternatea) is a natural source of anthocyanins that has the potential to enhance fish coloration, while Light Emitting Diode (LED) illumination may influence pigment expression and fish behavior. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different LED light colors on molly fish (Poecilia sphenops) fed diets supplemented with butterfly pea flower extract on color intensity, survival rate, and behavioral responses. The experiment employed a non-factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of four treatments with two replications: A (anthocyanin + red LED), B (anthocyanin + yellow LED), C (anthocyanin + white LED), and D (anthocyanin without LED). The observed parameters included color intensity, survival rate, and fish behavior during a 60-day rearing period. Data were analyzed using the Kruskal–Wallis test followed by the Mann–Whitney test when significant differences were detected (α = 0.05). Descriptively, treatment A showed the highest increase in color intensity (31.83%), although no significant differences were observed among treatments (p > 0.05, whereas the highest survival rate was found in treatment C (83.33%). Swimming activity was highest in treatments A and C (>70%), while feeding responses were relatively similar among treatments (50–70%). Behavioral interactions between males and females were more frequently observed in treatments C and D (50–70%). Statistical analysis indicated that the treatments did not significantly affect color intensity, survival rate, or behavioral responses of molly fish (p > 0.05). Nevertheless, the use of LED illumination in fish fed butterfly pea flower extract showed a positive trend in enhancing coloration and behavioral activity.
