Abstract

Compliance with laboratory standards remains low in a number of Vocational Secondary Schools (SMK). This study aims to analyse the laboratory facilities and infrastructure for the Light Vehicle Engineering specialisation programme at SMKs. This study is a programme evaluation study using a quantitative approach. The discrepancy model was used to illustrate the gap between the actual state of laboratory facilities and infrastructure and the established criteria. The sample for this study consisted of 9 teachers and 100 students in Years 11 and 12 at vocational secondary schools that utilise practical laboratories. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics. The results of this study show that the completeness of facilities in vocational schools’ electrical engineering practical rooms was 60 per cent; in engine maintenance practical rooms, 46 per cent; and in power transmission systems practical rooms, 40 per cent. The completeness of laboratory infrastructure in vocational schools for the electrical engineering competence was 62 per cent. The completeness of facilities in the mechanical maintenance practical training room was 68 per cent, in the power transmission systems practical training room 78 per cent, and in the light vehicle engineering practical training room 65 per cent. The implementation of laboratory management in accordance with the Vocational School Directorate’s guidelines is adequate, although there are some areas that require improvement, such as cleanliness, health and safety equipment, and the habitual application of health and safety protocols. Furthermore, there are still some areas that are not yet fully met; it is necessary to improve facilities and infrastructure, provide health and safety equipment, maintain cleanliness, and ensure the application of health and safety protocols during practical sessions. The implications of this research are that systematic and professional management can improve laboratory quality.
