Abstract

Hypertension is a major health problem among adults and is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular complications. Although standard treatment is central to blood pressure management, complementary therapies may provide additional support for blood pressure control. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of complementary therapies as adjuncts to standard treatment in reducing blood pressure among adults with hypertension. A systematic review was conducted to identify and synthesize primary studies evaluating complementary interventions in adults with hypertension, with systolic and/or diastolic blood pressure as outcomes. Thirteen primary studies met the inclusion criteria. The complementary interventions included herbal therapy, acupuncture, acupressure, mindfulness and relaxation, yoga, Tai Chi, exercise, transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation, hydrotherapy, and massage. Overall, most studies reported reductions in systolic and/or diastolic blood pressure following the interventions, including several studies in which complementary therapies were administered alongside standard antihypertensive treatment. These findings suggest that complementary therapies may serve as adjunctive approaches to hypertension management. However, differences in study design, intervention type, treatment duration, sample characteristics, and methodological quality limit direct comparisons between studies. Further high-quality randomized controlled trials are needed to strengthen the evidence for individual complementary therapies.
