Abstract

Diabetic neuropathic pain is a chronic complication of diabetes mellitus that can significantly reduce patients' quality of life due to persistent pain, sleep disturbances, and limitations in daily activities. Gabapentin is one of the drugs used to treat neuropathic pain, but the effectiveness of its use in outpatients at Dr. Gondo Suwarno Regional General Hospital, Semarang Regency, had never been studied. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of gabapentin in reducing diabetic neuropathic pain in outpatients at Dr. Gondo Suwarno Regional General Hospital, Semarang Regency. This was an observational study with a prospective design. The observed variables included patient characteristics, dose, and changes in pain complaints before and after therapy. Data were analyzed descriptively to describe the effectiveness of gabapentin therapy in reducing pain complaints in diabetic neuropathy patients. The mean difference in pain scores before and after therapy is 2.34 for gabapentin 100 mg (50 patients), 2.6 for gabapentin 200 mg (43 patients), 3 for gabapentin 300 mg (60 patients), and 2.8 for gabapentin 600 mg (7 patients). The degree of pain decreases after gabapentin administration. Based on clinical assessment, gabapentin 300 mg gives a better pain outcome than the other doses in treating patients at the neurology clinic of Dr. Gondo Suwarno Hospital. There is a significant improvement in the degree of pain before and after gabapentin administration. These findings can serve as preliminary data on the clinical benefits of gabapentin and as a basis for developing neuropathic pain therapy at this hospital.
