Abstract

Increasing broiler chicken populations in intensive rearing systems lead to excreta accumulation in litter, elevating ammonia levels and degrading housing environmental quality. Lemongrass (Cymbopogon nardus) contains bioactive compounds with strong antimicrobial properties and may serve as an effective natural litter additive. This study aimed to determine the effect of lemongrass addition on litter quality and environmental conditions of broiler chicken houses. Conducted from February 2 to March 9, 2026, at CV. Lestari Jaya Farm, Kubu Raya Regency, West Kalimantan, the research employed a Completely Randomized Design featuring five treatments and four replications: P0 (rice husk without lemongrass), P1 (5%), P2 (10%), P3 (15%), and P4 (20% lemongrass). Parameters observed included litter moisture content, ammonia concentration, pH, and temperature, analyzed using ANOVA followed by Duncan’s test at a 5% significance level. Results indicated that lemongrass addition significantly reduced ammonia concentration and litter pH ($P<0.05$), whereas moisture content (58–65%) and temperature (29.22–29.69°C) remained relatively stable. Ammonia levels ranged from 3.02–5.05 ppm, being lowest at P4 and highest at P0, while litter pH ranged from 6.45–7.10. In conclusion, 5% lemongrass is the minimum effective concentration to reduce ammonia levels and litter pH effectively.
