Abstract

Tannin is one of plant secondary metabolites that could protect proteins from various microbes, both in feed material and in rumen. Tannin can be used as an additive in the silage production process, especially high-protein feed material. The study aimed to evaluate the physical quality of soy sauce by-product silage treated with Acacia mangium Wild. tannin (AT; condensed tannin). This study used the fresh soy sauce by-product, tannin of acacia and chestnut (CT; hydrolysable tannin), BAL and propionate acid (PA). Soy sauce by-product was fermented in silo with a capacity of 1.3 Kg. This experiment was arranged in a complete randomized design with 6 treatments and 3 replications. The treatments were (R1) fermented soy sauce by-product, (R2) R1 + BAL, (R3) R1 + 2% AT, (R4) R1 + 2% CT, (R5) R1 + 0.5% PA and (R6) R1 + combination of 1% AT, 1% CT and 0.5% PA. The observed variables were the loss of dry matter (%), temperature (⁰C), smell, color and emerged fungus on silage. Analysis of variance was performed by SPSS version 23. For any significant difference between treatments was evaluated by DMRT at level of confident 5%. The result showed that AT suppressed the loss of dry matter up to 0.91%, and produced no smell with black color such as soybean color. The silage temperature was relatively similar for about 28.9-29.4 ⁰C, no emerged fungus, and did not able to maintain the normal silage temperature. Nevertheless, the use of acacia tannin could produce a good quality soy sauce by-product silage.

Abstract

Abstract

This study developed slow-release urea (SRU) additives using autoclaved oil palm empty fruit bunches (OPEFB) and urea via wet granulation to improve nitrogen utilization in ruminants. OPEFB was autoclaved at 121°C and 1 atm pressure to create a stable matrix, which was then combined with urea in different proportions to form SRU. In the first phase, the physical and morphological properties of autoclaved and non-autoclaved OPEFB were analysed using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Neutral detergent fibre (NDF) and acid detergent fibre (ADF) were measured, with hemicellulose calculated as the difference between NDF and ADF. In the second phase, SRU formulations included varying percentages of urea and autoclaved OPEFB: SRU 100 (100% urea), SRU 98 (2% OPEFB), SRU 96 (4% OPEFB), SRU 94 (6% OPEFB), SRU 92 (8% OPEFB), and SRU 90 (10% OPEFB). SEM and FTIR descriptively showed surface changes in OPEFB after autoclaving, including increased porosity. Autoclaving also descriptively reduced NDF, ADF, lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose contents. In vitro rumen incubation revealed that the addition of autoclaved OPEFB in SRU reduced urea release and pH in the rumen at various time intervals: 3, 6, 9, and 24 hours. SRU with autoclaved OPEFB optimizes urea use and controls nitrogen release.

Abstract

Elephant grass is a common forage for livestock fodder, yet it is prone to damage and requires preservation through silage-making techniques. This study was investigating the potential usage of expired commercial syrup (ECS) as a source of glucose in elephant grass silage production. The research used a Completely Randomized Design with five treatments and five replications. Treatments included a control group that consist of elephant grass (P1/control), and four supplemented grasses with ECS at levels of 2.50% (P2), 5% (P3), 7.50% (P4), and 10% (P5) based on dry matter (DM). After ensiling for 30 days at room temperature, various parameters were measured, i.e. aroma, texture, color, fungal growth, pH, dry matter, dry matter loss (DML), and fleigh value. Data were analysis using analysis of variance, followed by Duncan's test. The results revealed that ECS incorporation up to 10% DM had a significant influence on the evaluated parameters (p<0,05). The results showed P5 received the highest ratings from panellists for aroma (3.75; distinctive fermented acidity), texture (3.61; fine and non-clumping), and color (3.54; green). Additionally, P5 exhibited minimal fungal growth (1.57%), an optimal pH range (3.24-4.56), the highest dry matter content (31.4%), the lowest dry matter loss (2.27%), and the highest fleigh value (138). The research concluded that expired commercial syrup could use as a stimulant additive in elephant grass ensiling, effectively. Key words: elephant grass, expired commercial syrup, fungal growth, physical quality, silage

Abstract

Background: This study aimed to determine the effect of bitter leaf flour in ration with different levels of laying hens on the haematological profile. The materials used were 20 laying hens with Hy-line strain, 110 weeks old, placed in battery cages and feed with 16-18% crude protein content of 120 grams/head/day and drinking water addlibitum. Methods: The research was conducted using an experimental method with a completely randomized design four treatments that were repeated five times. The treatments were given in the form of bitter leaf flour in ration with levels of P0: 0% (control), P1: 1%, P2: 2%, P3: 3%. The variables measured were haematological profiles such as erythrocytes, haemoglobin, hematocrit and leukocytes. The data obtained were then analyzed using analysis of variance. Finding: The results showed that giving bitter leaf flour in ration with levels of 0%, 1%, 2%, and 3% had no significant effect (P>0.05) on erythrocytes, hemoglobin, hematocrit, and leukocytes of laying hens. Connclusion: It was concluded that giving levels of bitter leaf flour up to 3% did not affect the haematological profile of laying hens. Novelty/Originality of this Article: The novelty of this study lies in its exploration of bitter leaf flour (Vernonia Amygdalina) as a natural feed additive in the diet of elderly laying hens (110 weeks old), a topic that is still underrepresented in poultry research, especially regarding its effect on haematological health parameter.
