Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) and Social Media Addiction among university students who are active social media users. This research is motivated by the high intensity of social media use among students, which has the potential to lead to addictive behavior. FoMO, as a psychological factor, encourages individuals to stay constantly connected with others’ social activities, thereby increasing excessive social media use and the risk of developing Social Media Addiction (SMA). This study employed a quantitative approach with a correlational design. A total of 434 university students aged 18–24 years who actively use social media participated in this study using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected using two instruments: the Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) scale and the Social Media Addiction scale, both of which have been tested for validity and reliability. The results showed that the data were not normally distributed; therefore, the analysis was conducted using Spearman correlation. The analysis revealed that Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) has a significant relationship with Social Media Addiction, with a correlation coefficient of ρ = 0.395 and a significance value of p < 0.001, indicating a positive relationship with moderate correlation strength . This indicates that the higher the level of FoMO, the higher the tendency of Social Media Addiction among students.
