Abstract

This qualitative research explores the challenges faced by individuals with invisible disabilities, in Indonesia, where low public awareness fosters stigma and skepticism. Grounded in Social Cognitive Theory, the study examines how survivors negotiate health meanings interpersonally, while Social Stigma Theory is used to analyze the impact of labeling on their identity. Through interviews with nine participants, findings reveal significant communication barriers rooted in a broader societal lack of trust regarding non-visible symptoms, with some participants also reporting skepticism from healthcare providers. Such stigma often leads to self-stigmatization and emotional suppression. While some participants reported unsatisfactory clinical interactions, peer support communities and online networks proved vital in helping participants advocate for their care. The study emphasizes that social and clinical validation are essential for improving quality of life. It urges policymakers to integrate non-visible conditions into inclusive healthcare frameworks to create supportive environments for survivors.
