Abstract

Patients undergoing hospital treatment often face not only physical illness but also fear, anxiety, uncertainty, and a decline in hope. This study examines how da'wah communication is implemented in the Spiritual Guidance Program at Urip Sumoharjo Hospital, Bandar Lampung, by positioning therapeutic communication as a communication perspective rather than as a counseling intervention. A descriptive qualitative field-research design was employed. Data were obtained through semi-structured interviews, non-participant observation, and documentation involving five informants: three spiritual officers and two patients selected purposively. The analysis focused on communicator, audience, message, medium, method, interactional style, and communicative effects. The findings show that face-to-face prayer and advice are delivered through mau'izhah hasanah, simple language, permission before interaction, empathy, respectful tone, and adaptation to patients' conditions. Patients described feeling cared for and more hopeful about treatment. These accounts indicate perceived emotional and spiritual support rather than measured clinical improvement. Findings are limited to one hospital and five informants; ethical safeguards and interprofessional coordination are proposed as service-development priorities. The study contributes to Islamic communication scholarship by linking da'wah communication with therapeutic relational qualities in hospital spiritual services without shifting the analysis into counseling practice.
