Abstract

The use of smartphones among early childhood children has increased significantly along with the rapid development of digital technology. Although smartphones can serve as educational media, excessive use may negatively affect children's social and emotional behavior. This study aimed to analyze smartphone addiction and its impact on the behavior of children aged 5–6 years in Gampong Neuheun, Mesjid Raya District, Aceh Besar Regency. This research employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive research design. The participants consisted of 10 informants, including four parents, four children aged 5–6 years, and two village officials, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using an interactive qualitative analysis model involving data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed that children used smartphones for approximately one to three hours daily, mainly for watching YouTube videos and playing games. Excessive smartphone use contributed to emotional behavioral changes, including anger, crying, sulking, and tantrums when smartphone use was restricted. Furthermore, some children showed reduced social interaction with peers because they preferred using smartphones. The study also found that parental supervision through screen-time limitations, content monitoring, and alternative learning and play activities helped reduce the negative effects of smartphone use. Therefore, active parental involvement plays an essential role in preventing smartphone addiction and supporting children's social and emotional development.
